We received a call this morning by a client who had received an email saying that their AOL account was being terminated, a worry as they relied heavily on the company to provide them with their email service. Here is what the email said:

We asked for a copy of the email and found straight away that it was a fake and was not sent by AOL.

Here are the clues -

The address is not an AOL address. ( we've added the *'s)

Why would deleting accounts be part of scheduled maintenance and would a company as bigh as AOL misspell?

.The only purpose of this email was to scare the receiver and to make them click this link. This link looks like it goes to AOL but it was hiding another link that would have taken our client  here:

This link would have downloaded a virus or malware or would have taken you to somewhere you wouldn't want to go.

The sender uses the number 0 instead of the letter O in AOL - an old trick used by scammers to avoid their email being put in the SPAM bin.
